SUMMARY:Ushma Sargeant - Introduction to Fibre Art
DESCRIPTION:An introduction to the history of fibre as a medium for artistic expression. Exploring the materials\, tools\, and techniques used by the artist to create artwork using a variety of natural and synthetic fibers such as wool\, silk\, and acrylic. \n\n\n\nLiving on the Ridgeway National Trail\, where Wiltshire and Oxfordshire meet\, Ushma creates evocative textile art reflecting the stunning landscapes which surround her and exploring the subject of mental health through her art. The pieces Ushma creates depict this rural countryside in a medium which captures light\, depth and texture better than she feels she could achieve with paint. More recently Ushma’s textile work has extended toward abstract and vibrant work. She has been exploring the subjects of mental health and moods through the seasons and the symbolism\, history and mythology of local flora and fauna in relation to our health and wellbeing. Having started using fibre in her work in 2015\, Ushma is continuously exploring new techniques to achieve the desired effect. She uses a variety of fibres including wool\, silk\, camel\, alpaca\, llama\, angora\, flax\, seaweed\, bamboo and acrylic\, always looking for the right fibre and texture for the detail and enjoying the challenge of learning new techniques.

DESCRIPTION:Towards Abstract. You will be making your own colourful fibre ‘painting’ using a variety of fibre materials. Your finished piece will be approximately 15cm. \n\n\n\nWorkshop details. You will be introduced to the tools and materials and shown how to use them. You will be guided to create your own piece\, from finding your inspiration to choosing your materials and colours and through to the techniques and process of building your picture. Your tutor will be on hand at every stage to demonstrate and advise you while you work on your piece. You will have the opportunity to add details and embellishments using the wide selection of fibres on offer including wool\, silk\, camel\, alpaca\, llama\, angora\, flax\, seaweed\, bamboo and nylon.  \n\n\n\nSkills/techniques covered. You will learn how to transform your chosen word(s) into an idea for a fibre piece. You will learn how to choose colours\, shapes\, textures and materials to accentuate the story of your piece. You will learn the techniques of needle felting onto a flat surface. Safety when working with felting needles. How to use the various felting needles for different effects. The properties of the different fibres and how you can use them. Use of colour and texture and composition in fibre how to finish a fibre piece  \n\n\n\nMaterials. All materials will be provided by the tutor. Tools will be available to use during the workshop and optional to purchase should you wish to continue working at home.  \n\n\n\nWhat you need. A few words that inspire you. For example\, a quote\, a poem\, a feeling\, a favourite thing (a book\, a place\, a flower\, a season\, a colour). Don’t worry about too many details just bring a few words to start us off. (optional) any images or photographs that inspire you.

DESCRIPTION:Christine has been patchworking since she was a child and have made numerous quilts and patchwork items over the years. She has a very creative and liberating approach to patchworking\, throwing out most of the rules\, recycling wherever possible and creating unique pieces. She reference her influences\, Gees Bend and Boro\, and explain some of the different techniques she uses. More recently I have been asked to renovate and reimagine some vintage patchwork panels and create memory quilts from treasured garments.
