Hanny, an ex student of the Royal School of Needlework is passionate about Metal Thread embroidery and this enthusiasm was very evident in her presentation.
Working from her studio on the borders of Shropshire and Powys, she has developed a contemporary approach to this centuries old form of embroidery and in addition to her own pieces , she has collaborated with Interior Designers and Consultants to create large scale bespoke projects for hotels, restaurants and private residences internationally.
In addition Hanny is a very experienced Tutor, having taught at Hand & Lock, West Dean Collage, the British Museum and Kings College and in Holland and Australia.
A Broderers company scholarship has enabled Hanny to explore using straw and grasses to create a sustainable gold “thread”. She works directly with farmers in her local area to grow heritage wheat and in the process is keen to revive the craft of creative straw work. This research led to her becoming the winner of the inaugural Sanderson Rising Star Craft Award 2024 for her pioneering use of straw as sustainable gold.
