Exploring Velvet – Angie Hughes

Picture

On Tuesday, the day after her talk, Angie Hughes organised a one day workshop entitled “Exploring Velvet”.  Sixteen of us had a fun day learning various techniques Angie uses when working with velvet as a background.  The materials we used included dynaflow paints, Quink ink, acrylic paints, bleach, transfoils and glitter to add the sparkle.  Some of us made printing blocks and some used stencils to create their designs.  In the morning we all managed to produce a wonderfully individual background starting with a piece of white cotton velvet.  It was amazing to see the end results – each one was completely unique.  In the afternoon Angie got her Bernina out, placed a piece of organza on top of the velvet and demonstrated the next stage of adding the free machine embroidery.  What a fun day it was and a very big “thank you” to Angie for being so well organised and for being so generous with her techniques.  I just wish it could have been a two day workshop and then we could have completed the project.
