Gold work workshop with Robina Orchard – April 2015

Picture

On Monday 20 April, a bright sunny day, nine members attended a workshop learning Gold Work techniques from member Robina Orchard. We started by drawing a simple design and preparing the fabric. Then using the pack of specialist threads, supplied by Robina, we started on the first technique. Gold work is not a process to be rushed at but is intricate and precise. The room was soon hushed by the concentration required to master our first attempts.

Robina had brought along samples of her work and demonstrated several stitches, explaining about the various threads (purls, jap, twists, plate etc.) and the effects which could be achieved. In addition to the specific gold work stitches, which in the main are couching and filling stitches, small pieces of leather or lurex can be incorporated, areas can be raised by using padding as in trapunto. Beads, sequins and embroidery stitches can also be used to enhance the piece.

All in all a pleasant day spent learning a new technique and despite the lovely weather outside it was good to spend a few hours just “sitting and stitching”. Thanks to Robina for sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm for this particular style of textile work.
